French
At our school, French is taught as a core part of the curriculum in Key Stage 2, giving children the opportunity to develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in a new language. Children build their confidence progressively from Year 3 to Year 6, learning to understand and use a growing range of vocabulary, sentences and grammatical structures. As they move through KS2, pupils learn to take part in simple conversations, read and respond to short texts, present ideas aloud, write sentences from memory, and describe people, places and routines using increasingly complex language.
Although French is formally taught from Year 3 onwards, we love giving our Key Stage 1children small, light-touch opportunities to hear and enjoy the language. Simple words—such as colours or days of the week—might be woven into songs, stories or classroom routines, giving pupils a fun and natural first glimpse of French and helping them grow curious about languages from an early age.
All teachers use CGP Plus resources to support the teaching of French. These high-quality materials include clear visuals and audio, helping children develop accurate pronunciation while deepening their understanding of spelling–sound patterns. The consistency of these resources across year groups ensures a well-structured, engaging and accessible curriculum for all learners.
Our approach aims to build enthusiasm, cultural awareness and language foundations that prepare pupils for further language learning in Key Stage 3 and beyond.
