Physical Education (PE)

Physical Education

At Oakmeadow, PE is an important part of the curriculum, giving all children chances to develop physical skills, stay active, take part in varied activities and understand the role of movement in a healthy lifestyle. Skills are built progressively from Early Years through Key Stage 2, with pupils revisiting activities to refine and apply what they’ve learned. Lessons also develop teamwork, rules, tactics and personal awareness. PE links with wider wellbeing through daily activity opportunities, clubs and connections with subjects like Science, PSHE and Design and Technology. Pupils are also offered opportunities for competition to build confidence, resilience and social skills. Overall, the aim is for pupils to enjoy movement, recognise its benefits and feel able to be active in school and beyond.

We aim to balance the competitive aspects of sport with inclusive opportunities for all pupils to experience the benefits of participation. Throughout the year, we run a programme of competitions following the School Games pathways, beginning with levelone events embedded in PE lessons and regular House competitions, including a league format for pupils in Years 4–6. At level two, we take part in a wide range of interschool School Games events, along with local swimming, athletics and football competitions, with some pupils progressing to level three representation. We track participation to ensure a broad range of children can represent the school, and continue to expand opportunities through friendly fixtures with local schools. Alongside competitive pathways, we also take part in inclusive events such as sportsability competitions and Panathlons, ensuring activities remain accessible to pupils with a range of needs while supporting active, healthy lifestyles and positive wellbeing.

We offer leadership roles that support active play and build confidence. Upper Key Stage 2 pupils can become Playground Leaders, running activities for younger children, while Movement Mentors help organise House competitions, sports days and daily activity. Through our work with Energize and regular FIT15 sessions, we aim to keep the school active throughout the day. Movement Mentors also support staff in leading activities across lunchtime zones and run daily personal challenges within the House system to encourage participation and enjoyment.
