We are supported by Miss Davies and Miss Hart. A bit about the class: Hedgehogs class is one of our two year four classes, the other being Robins. Year 4 is an incredibly exciting time and we have so many exciting events that take place, particularly our 3 day residential to the Pioneer Centre. Lower Key Stage Two is a time for children to start building their independence and this is something we continue to support them with, ready for Upper Key Stage Two.
Morning Work: Each day starts with a morning task, tailored to each child’s individual learning needs, to ensure that every minute matters. The children enjoy this soft start to the morning, where they are expected to retrieve and organise their own belongings, start their learning and have a quiet chat with friends. This means that we as adults can check in with all children, ensuring that everyone is ready and settled for the day ahead.
Daily worship: As a church school, we have daily worship. This can be whole school or within class. Whole school worship allows us to celebrate our faith as a school family and to celebrate our school values: love, respect, faith, fellowship and thankfulness. We have the opportunity once per term to lead worship for the rest of the school – we explore themes through stories, we write prayers and allow time for reflecting too.
Lessons: We tend to keep our timetable well structured, as we know that predictable routines support all children. English and Handwriting always come before break, with Maths, Mastering Number and TT Rockstars time before lunch. This is a system that all of our children thrive from, and particularly our whole class TT Rockstars sessions. As you will be aware, times tables are incredibly important, and we take that very seriously in Hedgehogs class! You might walk in to independent application, Multiplication Check practice or even a whole class live tournament! Our afternoon sessions are usually dedicated to our foundation lessons, which can include a variety of lessons from Art, Computing, History and RE to name a few!
Fit 15 – We have various opportunities throughout the school day for the children to head down to the track for 15 minutes of additional daily exercise.
Whole class reading – we love taking the time after break to sit together and enjoy a good book! We vary these sessions so some involve reading our banded reading book, some where we can choose any book we like and even some sessions that we take outdoors to enjoy a book with a friend!
Snack and lunchtime: We value the art of conversation at meal times. At break time, all children sit and eat their snack in the classroom together. This allows a slow start after social times, and opportunities for staff members to ensure all children are settled after break time, whilst also monitoring that children are eating. Our lunch time provision is very similar, where children eat together in year groups in the dinner hall, supported by our amazing lunchtime staff.
