Welcome to Centipedes Class

We are supported by Mrs Marston, Miss Edwards, Mrs Martin, and Miss Gough. In Centipedes class, we recognise that children learn best through play and practical activities. Learning is both adult- and child-led and each session allows the children to apply and enhance their learning in different ways, for example through using tangible resources, partner talk and group discussion.

We have an overarching theme each term to help us to bring our learning to life; Autumn – Our Local Area; Spring – Toys, Old and New; Summer – At the Seaside. We enrich this learning with local area visits, historical visits and workshops, and a ‘seaside day’ in our lovely outdoor area.

We aim to foster a love of reading through sharing books throughout the day, including our own ‘favourites’, and encouraging reading at home with all children accessing books appropriate to their own stage of learning.

  • We begin the day with calm morning activities to develop literacy, maths and fine motor skills, such as letter and number formation, threading or construction. Soft background music helps us settle and greet one another.

  • We come together to look at our visual timetable and begin with Worship, Talk Time or phonics.

  • Talk Time allows children to share photographs and experiences from home using the Seesaw platform.

  • Worship is central to school life and may be whole school or class-based. We explore Christian values—love, respect, faith, resilience and integrity—through stories, songs and discussion, and celebrate children who demonstrate these values.

  • After Worship or Talk Time, we take part in phonics using Bug Club, developing segmenting, blending and early reading skills.

  • We then move on to maths, followed by snack time and our ‘Fit 15’ walk or run around the track.

  • Fine motor activities help warm up our ‘funky fingers’ before Curious Quests, where children invent, explore and write.

  • After our lunch break, we integrate relaxation and story time before exploring Mastering Number, where we use resources such as Rekenreks and Hungarian number frames to consolidate concepts explored in maths. This is followed by science or a foundation subject, such as history, computing, and art, to deepen our cultural knowledge. Fortnightly, we also do Forest School allowing children time to explore their outdoor environment and nurture the living things within it. This encourages love and respect for their surroundings.
  • Children also engage with Continuous Provision at least every afternoon, where they choose activities to ignite their interests, such as junk modelling and construction. At the end of the day, we share a story.
  • Snack and lunchtime: The children sit together on the carpet to enjoy a healthy fruit snack and drink. Children’s lunches consist of either a school hot dinner or a packed lunch from home. These experiences provide valuable opportunities for  children to socialise and interact with each other.
