Welcome to Caterpillars Class

We are supported by Miss Jones and Mrs Gough. In Caterpillars class, we recognise that children learn best through play and practical activities. Learning is both adult- and child-led and each session allows the children to apply and enhance their learning in different ways, such as partner talk, group discussion, and using tangible resources. We aim to foster a love of reading through sharing books throughout the day, including our own ‘favourites’, and encouraging reading at home with all children accessing books appropriate to their own stage of learning. We understand the importance of friendship and work hard to always look out for one another and respect each other’s feelings.

Each morning begins with calm activities that develop literacy, maths, and fine motor skills, such as letter and number formation, threading, or construction. Gentle music helps children settle as we greet one another before reviewing our visual timetable and starting the day with either Worship or Phonics.

As a church school, daily worship is an important part of our routine, celebrating our faith and school values of love, respect, faith, resilience, and integrity through stories and songs. Children then take part in phonics using Bug Club, followed by maths, snack time, and our ‘Fit 15’ to stay active. The morning continues with fine motor ‘funky fingers’ activities before Curious Quests, where children invent, explore, and write.

After lunch, children enjoy relaxation and story time to help them refocus and feel ready to learn. They then take part in Mastering Number, using resources such as Rekenreks and number frames to reinforce maths concepts. This is followed by science or a foundation subject, such as history, computing, or art. Fortnightly Forest School sessions give children opportunities to explore and care for the outdoor environment.

Each afternoon, children access Continuous Provision, choosing activities that spark their interests, such as junk modelling and construction. The day ends with ‘talk time’, where children share experiences on Seesaw, followed by a class story.

Snack and lunchtime are social times, with children enjoying a healthy fruit snack together and either a school dinner or packed lunch, encouraging conversation and interaction.
