At Oakmeadow CE Primary School, we believe that geography enables children to make sense of the world by exploring the relationships between people, places and environments. Through learning about diverse locations, cultures and physical processes, pupils develop curiosity, global awareness and a deeper understanding of their responsibilities as citizens of an interconnected world. Geography at Oakmeadow helps children recognise the wonder of our planet and understand how human actions shape the future—reflecting our school vision to “Live Life in All Its Fullness.”
We ensure all pupils progress securely and consistently through our schoolspecific Geography Progression Framework, which develops geographical knowledge, skills and fieldwork understanding from EYFS to Year 6. Our curriculum is structured through the Geography MediumTerm Knowledge Pathway, enabling teachers to build learning stepbystep while ensuring clear progression in both substantive knowledge (place, space, environment, physical and human geography) and disciplinary skills (enquiry, fieldwork, analysis and interpretation). Knowledge organisers support children in retaining key vocabulary, concepts and prior learning throughout each unit.
Each unit of learning is driven by a carefully chosen key enquiry question, introduced at the beginning of the topic and revisited through a sequenced series of lessons. Across these lessons, pupils investigate a range of sources, maps, data and fieldwork evidence. They learn to interpret geographical information, ask thoughtful questions and explain patterns and processes. As their understanding deepens, pupils apply their knowledge to form their own conclusions, articulate reasoned geographical explanations and reflect on how people interact with the natural world. By the end of each unit, pupils can confidently respond to the enquiry question with insight, accuracy and critical thinking.
Our aim is to develop inquisitive, responsible young geographers who:
Through rich content, secure progression and highquality teaching, we equip our pupils with a deepening understanding of the planet and the skills to interpret the changing world around them—preparing them to live thoughtfully, purposefully and fully.
