Our curriculum has been designed to cover the breadth of knowledge and skills that make up the three main PE aspects: Games, Dance and Gymnastics. Disciplines are returned to every other year so that skills learnt in earlier years are built upon progressively to give all children the chance of taking part in competitive sporting situations. The order of disciplines to be taught is also designed around the annual SchoolGames calendar, to provide children with the opportunity to represent their school at Level 2 inter-school competitions.
Each class is allocated two PE slots per week; one indoor and one outdoor. As a school, we are fortunate to benefit from an extra space in our dance studio.
At KS1, the focus is on developing the necessary pre-skills for competitive sport in fun and engaging contexts. At KS2, we introduce the rules to the different disciplines and build up from mini-game situations in Years 3 and 4 to to the recognised rules in Years 5 and 6.
The Early Years Foundation Stage follows the descriptors in the EYFS profile, and as such is predominantly aimed at developing gross and fine motor skills. From September 2017, we are implementing the exciting story-led schemes of Jungle Journey and Seaside Adventure for both Nursery and our EYFS classes.
